If you’re after a bit true crime at watch this weekendthen you might want to head over to Netflix top 10. The new docu-series The Most Hated Man On The Internet has just been released, and it has flown into the third spot of Netflix’s top 10.
Admittedly, there are a lot of things in Netflix’s Top 10 that are objectively not good. The most hated man on the internet doesn’t appear to be one of them, judging by the fact that he boasts an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score. The story also has a fairly happy ending.
Who is the most hated man on the internet?
The Internet’s Most Hated Man is a three-part documentary series about Hunter Moore, a self-proclaimed “work life ruiner.” information.
Moore was particularly notable for refusing all takedown requests and was dubbed “the most hated man on the internet” in a 2013 Rolling Stones article (opens in a new tab). He was also known to hack into email accounts, looking for nude photos to post on the site.
The documentary itself follows his downfall, thanks to the actions of Charlotte Laws, the mother of one of the site’s victims. Laws conducted a two-year investigation, gathering evidence from more than 40 victims before turning it over to the FBI.
We could tell you how it all ends, but that would spoil the fun of watching the series. But, needless to say, there’s a relatively happy ending to it all, and Moore gets some cash.
What do critics think of The Internet’s Most Hated Man?
The Internet’s Most Hated Man appears to be a hit with critics, with an 86% Rotten Tomato Index (opens in a new tab) based on seven reviews. The series also has an audience score of 88%, based on 8 ratings, and 7 out of 10 on IMDB based on 640 reviews. That’s pretty low audience engagement, so expect those to change significantly as more people tune in.
RogerEbert.com’s Brian Workshop (opens in a new tab) gave the series 2.5 out of 4, saying it is “An admirable reminder that even a mighty bully is no match for a parent seeking justice.” Meanwhile CNN’s Brian Lowry (opens in a new tab) noted that “The producers deliver a highly watchable yet salacious three-part documentary series, fueled by its truly sibilant, made-for-TV villain.”
Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han (opens in a new tab) said the show is “compelling, if a bit limited in scope”. Decision Maker’s Joe Keller (opens in a new tab) seems to be on the same page, noting that if “all you want is to see Hunter Moore get his reward. With this relatively short docuseries and fast pace, you’ll get that wish pretty quickly .
The Anita Singh of the Daily Telegraph (opens in a new tab) was less positive, giving a score of 2 out of 5 and asking why would the show “dredge this up a decade later, bringing it back into the public consciousness?” The review speculates that Netflix might think that “will people appreciate salacious details and repackage gruesome content under the guise of a cautionary tale?”
Should You Watch The Internet’s Most Hated Man?
The one thing to clarify about The Most Hated Man on the Internet is that he doesn’t whitewash any details or coddle the audience. There are some really nasty topics covered throughout the three-part series, not the least of which is the subject of revenge porn. This is something that many people may struggle with and should be kept in mind.
The show’s premise is pretty simple, and it’s not like there’s a big mystery involved – like there is with a true crime. So if you’re interested in watching an internet jerk deal with the consequences of his willful attempt to ruin lives, then this might be the kind of show for you.
