Internet sides with man who lost girlfriend and job in weeks: ‘Livid’

A man told how he was fired from his work and abandoned by his girlfriend after making the wrong decision.

In a now viral post on Reddit which received thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments, user u/FlashasaurusJr told the story.

“I fucked up choosing my girlfriend, we’ll call her Maria, on top of my job,” he wrote.

“Maria and I have been working together for a few [of] years now, but she was in a relationship the whole time until a few months ago. She was dating a guy, we’ll call him Hank, who is one of the longest serving employees in our business, he’s hugely well-liked and a really good guy,” he added.

While the Redditor admitted that he and Maria weren’t close, they ran in the same social circles and saw each other a lot both in and out of work.

“One thing led to another and we started dating,” the poster said.

“We immediately told Hank since we all work together and he didn’t seem to care, but we made it a point to keep quiet around the office so we didn’t start anything.”

According to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 50% of employees admit to having had a crush on a colleague. Meanwhile, nearly 2 in 5 workers have been asked out on a date by someone they work with, while one in 4 say they have asked out a colleague on a date.

SHRM Knowledge Director Alex Alonso, Ph.D. said, “The average person will spend approximately 90,000 hours at work throughout their lifetime. With that in mind, workplace romance are inevitable”.

The relationship continued until last week when the pair were spotted together and news broke in the office.

“Our boss found out and he was livid,” the Redditor said, “He called me into his office and made a big fuss about my relationship with a ‘made for a man’ girl and the fact that that I’m a bastard and a backstabber and all that. . I tried to explain myself and he didn’t have it.”

As her boss tried to get her to admit the relationship was a mistake, the poster said he instead doubled down on her commitment to her new partner. But it backfired when his boss told him that his contract, which was due for renewal in February, would not be renewed now.

“He said other things to cover his ass like I’m not producing any value for the company anyway, and technically I’m not getting fired, I’m just going to expire my current contract and I won’t be picked up again , ” he wrote.

After explaining that his new girlfriend cost him his job, the Redditor revealed how things continued to get worse when Maria decided she didn’t want to be with him anymore.

“She told me that dating me was a mistake, that I was a rebound for her after she got out of a long relationship, that she would rather live a single life as she travels the country for his role in our business,” the poster said. .

Losing both his job and his girlfriend in just a few short weeks, the Redditor received advice from commenters who rushed to share their thoughts.

One response said: ‘Honestly this is workplace harassment and you need to document everything that happened and will continue’, while another said: ‘Two bullets dodged. in time, you will look back on that moment as the day your life changed for the better.”

“Looks like you are now free to get a better job and a better girl,” another response said.
